Simulated Submillimetre Galaxy Surveys
نویسنده
چکیده
Current submillimetre surveys are hindered in their ability to reveal detailed information on the epoch of galaxy formation and the evolutionary history of a high-redshift starburst galaxy population. The difficulties are due to the small primary apertures (D < 15-m) of existing submil-limetre telescopes and the limited sensitivities of their first generation of bolometer cameras. This situation is changing rapidly due to a variety of powerful new ground-based, airborne and satellite FIR to millimetre wavelength facilities. Improving our understanding of the luminosity and clustering evolution provides the motivation for conducting cosmological submillimetre and millimetre surveys. It is therefore important that we quantify the limitations of the future surveys and the significance of the results that can be drawn from them. In this paper we present simulated surveys which are made as realistic as possible in order to address some key issues confronting existing and forthcoming surveys. We discuss the results from simulations with a range of wavelengths (200µm – 1.1 mm), spatial resolutions (6 ′′ – 27 ′′) and flux densities (0.01–310 mJy). We address how the measured source-counts could be affected by resolution and confusion, by the survey sensitivity and noise, and by the sampling variance due to clustering and shot-noise.

Bright submillimetre-selected galaxies have been found to be a rich source of strong gravitational lenses. However, strong gravitational lensing of extended sources leads inevitably to differential magnification. In this paper I quantify the effect of differential magnification on simulated far-infrared and submillimetre surveys of strong gravitational lenses, using a foreground population of N...

We discuss how gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows and multiwavelength observations of their host galaxies can be used to obtain information about the relative amounts of star formation happening in optical and submillimetre galaxies. That such an analysis will be possible follows from the currently-favoured idea that GRBs are closely linked with high-mass star formation. Studying GRB host...

We measure the local galaxy far-infrared (FIR) 60-to-100μm colour-luminosity distribution using an all-sky IRAS survey. This distribution is an important reference for the next generation of FIR–submillimetre surveys that have and will conduct deep extra-galactic surveys at 250–500μm. With the peak in dust-obscured star-forming activity leading to present-day giant ellipticals now believed to o...

Using the observed submillimetre source counts, from 250 to 1200μm [including the most recent 250, 350 and 500μm counts from Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimetre Telescope (BLAST)], we present a model capable of reproducing these results, which is used as a basis to make predictions for upcoming surveys with the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receive (SPIRE) instrument aboard the Hersch...
